Introduction
This document outlines the construction of a simple but effective inventory tracking system (i.e. depleting stock levels when orders are submitted) for the cm3 shop module.
We wish to make the inventory tracking system useful and robust, so we are keeping this development as simple as possible to assure that the project does not grow to an unmanageable size. If you have inventory management requirements that are not listed in this proposal please offer your feedback before the project commences.
Project Detail
Project Overview
The following features will be incorporated into the cm3 shop module inventory management system.
- A field in each product record will store the number of items of this product currently in stock.
- The stock level can optionally be depleted for each product when it is ordered on the website.
- The shopping cart can optionally not allow orders for more than the current stock level.
- The shopping cart can optionally show the current stock level. (Modifications to standard shop templates may be required to suit individual user preferences in this area. These modifications would normally be made by your nominated web developer.)
- An email notification will be optionally sent to a nominated shop administrator when the stock level has reached zero.
- A field in each product record will store a "low stock level" for that product.
- The shopping cart can optionally display a message against each product listing once the low stock level has been reached. E.g. "Current stock for this item is low. If stock is no longer available when your order is submitted, the system will inform you and give you the option of altering your order."
- A simple report in the cm3 shop management screens will allow you to see a list of all products that have fallen below the low stock level.
- An email notification will be optionally sent to a nominated shop administrator when the low stock level has been reached, and each time a product is ordered once it is below the low stock level.
- The shopping cart can optionally not allow orders for a particular product when one of two conditions are true (which you select):
- The stock level for that product has reached zero; or
- The stock level for that product has fallen below the low stock level.
- If a product is no longer available to order on the website due to depleted stock, you may optionally remove the product from public view or keep the product visible with a "sold out" message.
Some product design issues and procedural challenges will need to be considered during the course of development which have not yet been addressed. As always, specifications may change during the course of development.
Timeframe
We currently plan for the inventory tracking system to be available in January 2005.
