Administrator, Author/Editor, Developer, and External User Roles

It is important to note that roles within cm3 are not "hard coded", strictly defined security levels over which you have no control. Many of the aspects of the roles outlined below are dynamically configured by the system administrator using permissions within cm3.

  • Administrators have complete control over every aspect of the system, including setting the levels of control and amount of access that other users have within different parts of the cm3 management interface and the content archive.
  • Editors typically oversee the publishing of content through its development phase and into the live environment. Administrators normally allow editors restricted access to modify content structures (e.g. add or modify folders or containers), to add, modify or delete content within these structures, to publish content from "offline" to "live".
  • Authors (or "content contributors") are typically allowed to place content within the central archive and update their own articles of content. They may be given more advanced access of specific parts of the system at the administrator's discretion.
  • Standard users typically have custom-designed permissions that the application developer defines as part of the published application using cm3's security scripting. These users would typically not have any access to the central web administration consoles.
  • (A fifth role is available for advanced developers, the cm3 designer role, which opens access to the core templates and content that form the management interface. In other words, the system itself can be modified under this role.)
