Does cm3 place any restrictictions on graphic design? No, none. The very clear separation of presentation from content storage and business logic in cm3 means that you can create a website with any design you want. In fact since cm3 stores content in an object-oriented way, you can even use it to manage Macromedia Flash-driven websites*. Perhaps our favourite example of the flexibility of design in cm3 is www.floraforfauna.com, since this site lets visitors create their own designs! The Flora for Fauna lets users design and save their own 2D / 3D garden plans using plant graphics that are managed in cm3. That said, there are obvious practical design issues to consider when you are designing a website for any CMS. One of the biggest advantages of deploying a CMS is standardisation of layout using templates. The more complicated you make your design, the less likely that a CMS will actually be beneficial for your website. (This is true of any design and any CMS.) * No template macro language functions exist for Macromedia Flash at this point in time. If you choose to use Flash as a presentation layer, there will be some non trivial template programming involved.
